“Guru Gedara" (AIESEC Project on Education)

guru gedara Vision

“Connecting the next generation of Sri Lanka to the International…”

The Target audience

The project is designed to deliver an English learning platform for the students of the Local schools in Sri Lanka. The age range of the students focused by this project is decided by the project statistics that we have achieved so far which results in a potential age range of age 10-14.

How does it work?

AIESEC has its network of undergraduates and recent graduates from over 107 countries and territories all around the world. The foreign students who have the passion towards social development participate in the volunteer teaching program under the project through the AIESEC’s Global Internship program.

So the foreign Undergraduates / Recent graduates will be working as English teaching volunteers in the schools. The basic outlined job roles of the volunteers are shown below.

Job role of the foreign volunteers

  • The basic job role of the volunteers will be helping the local students to understand and speak English. The target group of students would be the students of age group 10 – 14 unless changes are specified by the school administration.
  • The Volunteers will be placed in Local schools with an agreement for the period of the internship of the intern (minimum of 6 weeks).
  • The curriculum for teaching is prepared by AIESEC with the help of the English Language Teaching Units (ELTUs) of local universities of Sri Lanka.
  • It’s the choice of the staff and the school administration whether or not to adopt the curriculum that AIESEC will provide, after inspecting it.
  • School administration is in charge of providing proper time slots for the teaching sessions. The times could be during school hours or after school.
  • Hence, this will be a full time volunteer ship for the foreign undergraduates.

Other special features of the project

  • A Learning Network day has been planned with the objective of networking all the schools, Companies and other entities that are working with AIESEC. This event will provide a good platform for the students to show their talents with what they learned and a good opportunity for all the stakeholders to get together.
  •  8 Learning forums have been planned throughout the project cycle and these sessions could be seminars, workshops, discussions or lectures. The events are being planned to align with the learning content of the project.
  • The students of the school will be given the opportunity to take part in the Poster art exhibition which is scheduled with one of the environment projects of AIESEC in Sri Lanka.
